Takeaway Review
The Sangthai, Escrick

Pacific Rim cuisine is now very popular in the West, with Thai food becoming a firm favourite for many, and fortunately
for us authentic Thai cooking can be found near to home at The Sangthai Restaurant in Escrick ,which also offers a takeaway service.

We asked our friends Kelvin and Geraldine, who are seasoned travellers to the Far East, to join us at home to sample the delights of traditional Thai cooking.

We ordered a good range of dishes, as Thai food is ideal for sharing and is best served banquet style. The food was packed in microwavable containers, but stayed piping hot during the journey home and didn’t need to be warmed up.

As we nibbled on some complimentary prawn crackers, we unpacked the starters –pork spare ribs, deep fried chicken breast wrapped in pandan leaves and served with a sweet and sour plum sauce, Thai spring rolls with plum dipping sauce and Yum Pat –a spicy salad dressed in lime juice,
chillies and coriander .

The food was beautifully presented, especially the chicken, which was wrapped and cooked in neat little parcels of bright green pandan leaves, and the pork was succulent and falling off the bone. The salad was hot and spicy and complimented the other milder dishes wonderfully.

For the main courses, we ordered fillet of haddock served in a red curry and coconut cream sauce, Thai red duck curry (duck dishes are a Sangthai speciality) stir fried asparagus and sweetcorn in oyster sauce and Pat Thai tofu –Thai noodles with tofu and beansprouts, along with stir fried rice and Thai fragrant rice.

The duck, which was flavoured with coriander, pineapple and coconut milk was absolutely delicious and the haddock was delightfully tender. The asparagus was plentiful and al dente, and the silky noodles were beautifully cooked in a mild, satay style sauce .

Geraldine commented “Thai food is not as hot and spicy as some expect –more aromatic and delicate in flavour, and the heat is often balanced by other softer flavours. A takeaway like this is perfect for relaxed entertaining as much of it is eaten with the fingers and is made for sharing.”

The last word goes to Kelvin “This is restaurant style food
of the highest quality – it is the best Thai food I’ve eaten
outside of Thailand.”
